The CGS working group wishes to refine and enhance the Common Information Model (CIM) that is being standardized by the DMTF (www.dmtf.org) to increase CIM’s utility as an information resource for Grid computing.  A common information model is needed as a base of interoperability between the object definitions of the different Grid Working Groups.  CIM is finding more and more interest as a possible solution for satisfying this need.

The results of this working group will help in the creation of an interoperable Grid architecture, and will thus have impact on deployment and operations. Since it is work on a meta information model no special security issues will have to be addressed.

Up to this point, the CGS-WG has focused on the specification of a Job Submission Information Model (JSIM), and this document is being finalized for review by the GFSG and for public comment.  Consequently, the CGS-WG intends to tackle another piece of the interoperability pie at the request of the Data Access and Integration Services Working Group (DAIS-WG).  Specifically, while CIM contains classes that are intended to represent the status of software installed on a particular host computer, it does not address all the needs of databases and other Grid middleware and application software. It is thus our interest to review and extend CIM in this area, encourage the DMTF to adopt these extensions, and supply the DAIS-WG in particular with OGSI Service Data Definitions that correspond to the extended CIM classes.

Goals/Milestones:

Goals

The group expects that the following goals will be pursued and met:

  • The general goal of the CGS-WG is to produce enhanced CIM specifications and schemas of classes urgently needed within the GGF in the context of (but not limited to) OGSA, and to promote these specifications and schemas within the DMTF for their adoption as CIM standards.

  • The current primary goal of the CGS-WG is to produce a CIM-based “Software Resource Information Model” (SRIM) suitable for representing the installation, configuration and state of Grid middleware and application software, including databases, and to promote this model within the DMTF for their adoption as CIM standards.

  • Along with this goal the CGS-WG will specify OGSI Service Data Definitions that map to SRIM, for use by the DAIS-WG and other interested parties.

  • The CGS-WG will liaise with other GGF working groups for their input.

In addition, the group may pursue the following goals:

  • Exploring the possible use of evolving CIM-based Open Source software in Grid computing.

  • Presenting the results of the WG to the other Grid Working Groups.

Milestones

  • Month 1: Re-establishment of GridForge website and Mailing list

  • Month 3: first draft of Software Resource Information Model specification available

  • Month 6: second draft of Software Resource Information Model specification available

  • Month 9: final document on Software Resource Information Model specification available for submission to GGF

  • Month 12: SDD’s corresponding to SRIM completed and made available to DAIS-WG and others

  • Month 18: Adoption by DMTF of SRIM enhancements
